West Edmonton Mall

White Oaks Mall
Located at Veteran’s Parkway and Wabash Avenue in Springfield, Illinois, White Oaks Mall is the state capital’s largest enclosed shopping center. It is operated by the Simon Property Group and features more than 100 stores. It was built on an eighty-acre plot and opened in 1977. Its name honors the white oak tree, which is the state tree of Illinois. The first-ever mall in the city of Springfield was a joint project by Indianapolis-based Melvin Simon & Associates (today’s Simon Property Group), the Springfield-based Park Realty Company, and Chicago-based Arthur Rubloff.
In addition to a variety of stores and services, White Oaks Mall also hosts several events throughout the year. In June, the mall hosts a carnival called North American Midway Entertainment that runs through June 12. Families can enjoy rides like Tilt-A-Whirl and Vertigo and eat food at five different food stands.
The mall is anchored by department stores like Macy’s and Sears and includes stores such as Michaels, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Esporta, and LA Fitness. It also offers a carousel and many specialty shops. The mall is the second most popular shopping destination in Springfield.
There are a few options for getting around White Oaks Mall, but it is best to have a car. Public transportation is limited, and it takes a while to reach the area from downtown.
